What’s your hobby?

I think the most frequent, dishonestly answered question is “what’s your hobby?”

It’s a common question to break the ice or provide detailed introduction. This question is entrusted with the complicated task of uncovering a personality. And yes, It is a vital part of the ‘traditional Indian arrange marriage’ soul-mate finding process, which ensures results after a mere thirty minute meeting.

It’s a trap. Not everyone has a hobby, but confessing it certifies you as a bore.

People come up with lame responses like “sleep” pretending to be funny and smart at the same time and failing. Other extends reality a little …say “gardening” though it usually means they own an unkempt garden, “coin collector” if there are too many cents on the kitchen counter, “stamp collector” if there is unread mail on the coffee table or “photography” if they ever clicked the edge of a leaf or wet spider web.

Seriously my hobby by this measure is to pick my nose. It definitely fits the definition “An activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure”. And I always feel happy and smile involuntarily at a job well done. :)

Not everyone has a hobby or passion. Mundane life marred with laziness is something we should proudly flaunt and should openly challenge the need of a hobby in the times of great cable TV.
